Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - SDPD Staffing Report

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE

FOR THE CITIZENS OF SAN DIEGO

According to the November 16, 2009, San Diego Police Department staffing report, the SDPD budgeted staffing is 2125 sworn positions. This is after the elimination of several sworn positions from the budget.  As of today, the SDPD is 231 officers below it's budgeted staffing.

 AND

• Additionally, 121 officers are not available for duty for a variety of reasons including military leave and long-term injury / illness.
• An additional 78 officers are in active-recruit status.  These officers are only available in a limited capacity and while accompanied by a training officer.

This leaves 1695 officers, regardless of rank or position to police a city of over 1,255,540 RESIDENTS (2005 census) or about 1.2 officers per 1000 residents.  This number includes the Chief of Police, several Assistant Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants and many others who do not respond to calls for service or investigate crimes.

The San Diego Police Officers Association will continue to keep you informed on the true state of your police department.  We will post changes to staffing numbers as they are updated each week.

We encourage you to contact your elected officials and voice your concerns about police staffing levels and your safety.
