San Diego Police Officers Association Response to Mayor Sanders' Proposed Budget Adjustments
San Diego, CA – November 24, 2009 – The San Diego Police Officers Association, Inc. (SDPOA) issued the following statement today in response to Jerry Sanders' proposed budget adjustments, which include approximately $12 million in cuts to the Police Department:
"The city's current budget problems require every city department to be part of a solution, however, our number one priority has always been to ensure there are no police officer layoffs in ANY proposed budget adjustments,” said Brian Marvel, President of the San Diego Police Officers Association. "SDPOA has had a constructive dialogue with the Mayor regarding this budget, and we support his budget recommendation not to layoff any police officers, which will allow us to protect our citizens and the safety of our officers. These proposed cuts will certainly impact department operations, however, our officers will continue to do the best job possible," said Marvel.
"These are tough times not just for local government, but for individuals and families throughout our city but public safety is a core service of government," said Brian Marvel. "In times of crisis, all of us in city government need to pull together and do our best to maintain the vital core services for our residents. SDPOA is part of that team, and we're proud to do our part to get San Diego through these tough times."
